Biography
John is a Registered Patent Agent and Registered Trade Mark Agent in Canada and is registered to represent Canadian clients before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lanchester Polytechnic ( now Coventry University) and started his patent career at Massey Ferguson in the UK. After emigrating to Canada in 1977, he qualified as a Patent Agent and Trademark Agent. John has provided strategic advice on the development and enforcement of intellectual property rights for Canadian companies in the mechanical and electrical fields. His professional experience includes protecting the articulated street cars that run on some lines in Toronto, developing a licensing program for a Canadian company holding key patents covering the compact disc, and developing the IP portfolio of a Canadian start-up company who developed World leading encryption technology. He has also worked with smaller Canadian companies in protecting their key innovations.
John has been listed as a patent expert in Legal Media Group’s Guide to the World’s Leading Patent Experts.
John has played a leading role in developing formal patent training courses around the world. He has trained a number of entrants to the profession and lectured at the Patent & Trademark Institute of Canada patent agency course at McGill University for a number of years.
John is a fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and has served on its council. He is past president of the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI), an international organization representing the IP practitioner worldwide, and most recently president of FICPI’s Deontology Committee.
