Equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDI&B) is a strategic priority at Georgian. We’re dedicated to fostering a learning and working environment where everyone feels seen, heard and knows they belong through demonstrable, accountable and system-wide commitments to diversity, de-colonization, anti-racism, equity and inclusion. This days of significance calendar lists the days and months that are recognized within the Georgian community.
There are several dates each month that are recognized, observed and celebrated across Canada and internationally, and we encourage everyone to self-educate by referring to these great resources:
- Canadian important and commemorative days.
- UN International Days and Weeks.

April 1 to 30 – Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time to reflect, educate, and take action. This year also commemorates 25 years of SAAM, symbolizing progress while reminding us of the work still ahead. SAAM brings communities together to raise awareness about sexual violence and its impact on survivors, families, and society. It is an opportunity to promote prevention, advocate for survivors, and support healing and recovery for those affected by sexual assault.
History of Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) was officially recognized in the United States in 2001 to highlight the issue of sexual violence and promote prevention, healing, and support for survivors. Long before its official recognition, community members had been working together to increase awareness of the widespread and serious nature of sexual violence and to address the lack of adequate responses to these issues. SAAM was created to bring greater attention to the problem and to encourage individuals and communities to take action in preventing sexual violence and supporting survivors.
This year’s theme, “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward” honours the history and growth of the movement while reaffirming our commitment to a safer future for all. Looking back, we remember the survivors and advocates who laid the foundation for change. Moving forward, we renew our focus on prevention, healing, and action. Every voice matters. Every action counts.
Why you should participate in activities and events
Participating in SAAM activities is important because it helps build awareness and encourages allyship in addressing sexual violence. By taking part in activities and events this month, individuals can learn more about the impact sexual violence has on survivors, their families, and communities, while also gaining insight into how we can work together to prevent it. It also helps to create safe and inclusive communities where survivors feel supported and valued. It sends a message that sexual violence will not be tolerated and that we all have a role to play in preventing it. By coming together to raise awareness and support survivors, we can create a world where everyone can live free from fear of sexual assault.
Through various activities and learning opportunities happening at Georgian campuses and on social media, students and employees will be able to engage in a variety of activities to grow further in their understanding of the following topics:
- Challenging victim-blaming narratives – Understanding how harmful myths that contribute to rape culture and learning how to shift these perspectives.
- Empowerment and solidarity – Using creative activism to express support for survivors and promote a culture of empowerment and allyship.
- Consent and awareness – Engaging in conversations that emphasize the importance of consent, boundaries, and respectful relationships.
- Justice and advocacy – Raising awareness about systemic injustices faced by survivors and encouraging advocacy for policy changes.

April 8 – International Day of Pink
International Day of Pink is a global movement held each April that encourages people to wear pink and stand against bullying, discrimination, and hate, particularly toward 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. It’s youth-driven and focuses on education, awareness and creating safer, more inclusive spaces through campaigns, events, and workshops.
Its significance lies in promoting solidarity and action. The day highlights the ongoing impact of discrimination and calls on individuals and communities to actively support equality, amplify marginalized voices, and challenge injustice. Each year also carries a theme (like 2026’s “ECHO”), which honours past activism and encourages continued progress toward a more inclusive future
April 22 – Earth Day
Earth Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about protecting our planet, recognize environmental movements, and reflect on the importance of preserving Earth’s finite resources.
At Georgian, there’s a lot to celebrate, from innovative environmental projects and research to initiatives and curriculum that strengthen our commitment to sustainability and creating a better future for our communities.
Georgian has also made meaningful commitments aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). These 17 goals offer a comprehensive framework for building a more sustainable and equitable world. Efforts such as protecting biodiversity (SDGs 14 and 15), reducing waste (SDG 12), advancing clean energy (SDG 7), and taking climate action (SDG 13) reflect both the spirit of Earth Day and Georgian’s dedication to sustainability.
Further reinforcing this commitment, both Georgian College and the Georgian College Students’ Association have signed the UN SDG Accord, strengthening our shared focus on advancing sustainability initiatives.
