Course description
Students examine current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) illnesses that impact children and youth including, but not limited to neurodevelopmental disorders, schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, bipolar and related disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, trauma-and stressor-related disorders, disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, neurocognitive disorders and personality disorders. Students develop both formal (evidence informed) and informal (lifespace) interventions to promote positive change and healthy development in children and youth. In addition, within the CYC scope of practice, students explore the pharmacological treatments for various disorders with a focus on the classes of medication, how these medications work, medication side effects and the rights and best practices of medication administration
